MY STORY
Photography has always been close to my heart, ever since a young age. Currently, I live at home in North Devon with my wonderful ginger cat and alongside photography I also love music, classic cars and surfing. In my art, I like to focus upon nature and people, how the two interconnect and tell stories- to the observer, to that in frame or to both. Ultimately, art is something imperative to my being; I feel captivated by composition, narratives and expression. It is through artistic mediums and nature that I find myself, and feel most at home.
For as long as I can remember, I would take my camera with me wherever I went. I began with nature photography: flora, fauna and landscapes. I undertook photography courses to hone my technical skills, and continued to love experimenting within the artform. When I went to college I found new inspirations in portraiture and film photography. To this day, my love for photography remains the same: capturing a subject in a moment, immortalised, and ensuring that I hold them in their best light. It means a lot to me when people like their photographs, and it also means a lot to me to capture aspects of our natural world I love. I hope that too by creating art, I am giving something back, an offering, to that which inspires me: nature.
Later, I gained a BSc in Marine Biology, and then became a fully qualified surf instructor, working at beaches around home in North Devon. After this, I moved across the ocean to Sri Lanka then Indonesia, working as a surf instructor and a photographer. Despite having began surfing at age 5, before moving abroad I had never combined my love for surfing with my love for photography. Here, I adored experimenting within the tropical landscapes capturing nature, lifestyle and portraiture, as well as utilising my skills as an advanced surfer to capture perfect surf shots.
Coming home, I would cruise the Devon and Cornwall coastlines, reinstating the love I felt for photographing the colours, landforms and energy of the South West. I invested in gear that would allow me to professionally capture surfers, and now spend time at my local breaks and beaches, or still, just as I did when I was young, run around with a camera smiling at trees.
At my core, I do not dream of having photographs on billboards promoting brands. It is the people, the nature, the spirit in frame that is important to me. I dream of composing photographs, capturing moments: making art. Art that somebody cherishes so much so that they print off that photo and have it on their wall, show to their friends or simply smile at.
